Review for math quiz:
1) Choosing an appropriate unit of measurement (what you would measure using cm, m, decametres, etc.)
2) Converting units (Use the King Henry Died Unusually Drinking Chocolate Milk" strategy)
3) Measurement word problems involving conversion, as done in class.
E.g. Mary buys a reel of thread for sewing. There are 10 m of thread on the reel. She uses 210 cm. How much is left on the reel in cm?
Carlos has a 1.2 meter long piece of wood. He wants to cut it into 3 equal lengths. How long should each piece be in mm?
Tips for solving conversion problems:
1. Always convert one measurement into the same unit as the other. Make sure you are working with numbers that are in the SAME unit.
2. Check that the operations you are using make sense and have a purpose - why are you dividing? why are you multiplying?
3. Make sure your answer is in the correct unit of measurement as stated in the question. Check the question to make sure your answer matches what it was asking. (E.g. if the question is "how many staples can you make?" your answer should not be "25 cm" but "25 staples". Always double check!)
4. Show all the steps you take - conversions and operations.
5. Check your addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division work by doing the opposite operation.
5. Write your final answer in a sentence
